Finding Your Rock

If you ever find yourself driving past Erickson, Manitoba, look out the window as you approach town, and you’ll see this amazing project overlooking the school playground that the students of Erickson Elementary created, with the support of their guidance counsellor, Dana Hanson.

After learning about the basic needs, each of the children was given a rock, on which they painted a picture to represent the need that was most important to them.  These rocks were glued on to form the outline of the basic needs circle.

Each day, as they children play, they have this permanent reminder of their needs, and the conversations they have had about how to respect and care for the needs of others.

What other ways have you found to facilitate this discussion?
